Evelyn Muhlhan,Nurse-Midwife, RN, BSN, CNM, CHT, MS.
As a nurse-midwife she has practiced in all three settings: hospital, home and birth center during her 21 year career.
She received an Associate in Nursing in 1976 from the Community College of Baltimore and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland in 1981. She practiced midwifery in the USAF for nine years, attending nearly a thousand births. In 2000 she was certified by the American Institute of Hypnotherapy and also received a Certification Form from the HypnoBirthing Institute. She received her Masters in Nurse-Midwifery from Stony Brook New York in 2002. She is currently furthering enhancing her midwifery techniques through the study of Herbs and Homeopathy and how these modalities work for the pregnant and non-pregnant woman to help maintain health including classes taken through the National Center for Homeopathy.
Evelyn’s experience has been a constant source of inspiration in her life – One year when stationed at Davis-Mothan she was the only midwife in attendance delivering 23 births in one month, a record for her. She had been practicing for less than a year.
Her career with the Air Force ended in December 1994 when she left the service to start a Home Birth practice in Phoenix, Arizona. Her practice was named Gentle Beginnings and she had the honor of serving the Home Birth community for three years. Those early home birth years taught her patience, humility and that women can give birth without IV’s, electronic monitoring and that they could eat grits in labor if they choose.
She moved back to Baltimore, Maryland in January 1998 and joined the Baltimore Birth Center staff where she delivered for 6 years. The Birth Center closed in May 2004 after over two decades of serving and providing women with birth choices. That was a sad time for Evelyn and the birthing community – yet, again, another place where women could go to give birth their way was lost.
Evelyn opened Alternative Birth Choices in 2005 to offer women the opportunity to choose the way they give birth.
